Youth unemployment in Italy is now running at 30% – which seems a dangerously high level to me. At a recent ‘gara’ in Naples – the type of common entrance exam to see who will win the race to get one of 500 state jobs, there were 120,000 applicants. All of whom had to sit the exams spread over a week – and all of whom will now be placed in order of ‘bestness’ – the top five hundred being offered the jobs of traffic warden, park attendant and so on —
